How could teens be more focused in school than in the 80's?

What were the main distractions of teens throughout the centuries?
Social Change:
The social change that has occurred in this time period (between the 80's and now) has been significant. Technology has become much more 1st priority to teens than school. In the 80's there weren't as many technological distractions as there are now, but there were more distractions about how the world could be put together fully, as they were going through a lot of change in the world.
